What was the big deal about rock and roll?

What was the big deal about rock and roll, do you think? How did it tie into other currents going on in the 1950s, and what does that suggest about the perception and study of history?|||It was a big deal because it was so different from what the older generation was used to. What it means for history is that it is a part of a pattern in culture changes: like with a lot of other things, young people wanted one thing, and their parents and grandparents thought that it was outrageous and that it was corrupting youth. If you look at some TV appearances of Elvis Presley in the 50s, you will see that they never show him below waist. That's because his way of dancing (moving hips) was considered too sexual and it clashed with American puritanical values. Historical lesson: cultures change.

Another reason why rock and roll was significant was that it was starting to overcome racial segregation. Rock and roll started as "black" music, but to the avail of white people, their kids liked it too. As at that time whites were kind of afraid of blacks due to all the stereotypes (at least so I have learned from To Kill a Mockingbird; I was not actually there), it was a big deal that their white kids were suddenly visiting places frequented by blacks and mingled with them. Again, it was a battle of generations.|||Rock music was the transition of music and of culture. The older generation was used to singing traditional songs that were usually church hymns. When people such as Elvis and the Beatles came along, society started to change and move forward. It would take me a long time to describe the whole thing..So here are some links to further your research. Good luck!
