Joey DeMaio (Manowar) claimed that Richard Wagner might be the great-grandfather of metal, because of his massive orchestration and epic storytelling (although I find his operas a snoozefest). I disagree with him, but a lot of classical composers were an inspiration for neo-classical and power metal.|||* Django Reinhardt created rock guitar structures.
* Stephen Foster as the great-etc.-grandfather of popular music.
* Sousa's instrumentation was loud and brash; I've got to believe that inspired something.
* Does Hank Williams Sr. count? Lots of his songs were covered by early rockers.
* Charlie Parker's development of bebop.
Many others, but I'll leave this here so others can play!|||The inner bluesy pains, the instrumental mastery, the joyous expressions, and the soulful vibrations of many a musical geniuses have contributed to the evolution of what we recognize today as Rock and Roll. ... Music has always been a work in progress, it did not, and could not have, come about through the efforts of a single individual (or even a small group of individuals).
That said, like "Shades of Grey", I too believe that if one was to point to a profound singular impact, it has to be that of Muddy Waters'. ... He Was, Is, and Will Always be THE Granddaddy of Rock%26amp;Roll.
BTW: That version of Mannish Boy (Muddy Waters %26amp; The Band) is my all-time favorite, too. It's an unbelievably beautiful rendition, and I'm glad someone posted it on YT, again.
It's a GEM worth repeating here:
