How did rock and roll start?

i'm doing this speech about rock and roll and i was wondering how it started|||It started when people like Chuck Berry started playing blues scales with a heavier distortion in the 50's, it then evolved into its own thing completely from blues by the late 60's into a genre all of its own.|||Rock and roll (often written as rock %26amp; roll or rock 鈥檔鈥?roll) is a genre of popular music that evolved in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Its roots lay mainly in blues, rhythm and blues, country, folk, gospel, and jazz. The style subsequently spread to the rest of the world and developed further, leading ultimately to modern rock music...:)|||Its hard to pin down when exactly it came into being, but musicologists figure the first recording of this new brand version of souped up rhythm %26amp; blues, fused in some cases with bits of old country music rhythms, was Ike Turner's 1951 single "Rocket 88".

Although better known as Tina Turner's abusive husband, Ike Turner was highly regarded for many years as band leader of a kick butt R%26amp;B band. Travelling to a recording session one day, with all the band instruments tied to to the roof of the car, the band's car made a sudden stop, sending the guitar amp flying forward a few dozen feet before bouncing to a stop in the middle of the road. The amp proved to still work but sounded best if turned up. The distorted tone proved to be a godsend for the song, and the rest is history.|||The terminology is actually older than the genre.

It has it's origins in gospel. A 1916 recording of "The Camp Meeting Jubilee" included the term "rocking and rolling" and in 1937 Ella Fitzgerald cut a record with the Chick Webb Orchestra that included the lyric, "So won't you satisfy my soul with the rock and roll."

Perhaps the true origins of modern rock belong to inventor and guitarist Les Paul. He invented the solid body electric guitar and was the first to utilize multi-track recording. Bing Crosby, an early investor in Ampex, gave Les two recorders which he turned unto the 1st multi-track machine.|||Great answer on the terminology!

In addition: "Rock and roll" used to be African-American slang for sex; new insight into what Ella was singing about.

Then, in Vietnam, the term was applied to fully-automatic weapons fire, as in a patrol leader telling his guys to turn their weapons safeties off by saying "let's rock'n'roll"|||as blues instrumentation got more complex it became rythm and blues. early rock and roll was esentially a newer form of rythm and blues that included the newly popularized electric guitar.|||i have always heard that elvis Presley started rock n roll.|||it came from the blues
